  1. combine cranberries and 1/2 cup sugar, set aside
  2. combine flour, 1 1/2 cups sugar, baking powder, baking soda and salt in mixing bowl. stir well to blend
  3. beat eggs, orange juice, oil and orange rind together
  4. add to dry ingredient, stirring until just moistened
  5. fold into cranberry mixture, chocolate chips and nuts
  6. divide batter into 8 well greased 10 oz cans
  7. bake at 350°F for 35-40min, or until cake tester inserted comes out clean
  8. cool 10 min, then run thin bladed knife around sides of tin to loosen
  9. turn out on rack to cool completely, wrap and store overnight before slicing or freezing for later use
